Technical Description
P0135 is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) detects a malfunction in the heater circuit of the upstream oxygen sensor (Sensor 1) on Bank 1. To provide accurate voltage signals, the O2 sensor must reach an operating temperature of approximately 315°C (600°F). The heater element reduces the time needed to reach this state. The ECM monitors the heater circuit for proper current draw. If it detects an open circuit, short to ground, or excessive resistance, P0135 is stored. This prevents the system from entering Closed Loop operation quickly, leading to increased emissions and fuel consumption.
Possible Causes
Defective heater element inside the O2 sensor (internal open circuit)
Damaged wiring or corrosion in the O2 sensor connector
Blown fuse for the O2 sensor heater circuit
Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM) or ground circuit issue

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
