Technical Description
P013A is stored when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the downstream Oxygen (O2) sensor on Bank 1 (Sensor 2) exhibits a delayed response time when switching from a rich to a lean fuel mixture signal. Bank 1 refers to the side of the engine containing cylinder 1, and Sensor 2 is located after the catalytic converter. While the primary role of Sensor 2 is catalyst monitoring, the ECU performs a response test by monitoring the voltage drop (typically from ~0.8V to below 0.2V). If the transition time exceeds calibrated limits, the code is triggered, often indicating sensor degradation or exhaust system leaks.
Possible Causes
Faulty or contaminated downstream O2 sensor
Exhaust leak near the sensor
Damaged wiring or corroded connectors
Catalytic converter failure or PCM/ECU software issue

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
