Technical Description
P0148 is a generic OBD-II code indicating a fuel delivery error. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) monitors the actual fuel pressure via the Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) sensor and compares it with the target pressure. If there is a significant deviation where the high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) cannot meet the commanded delivery, this code is stored. It often points to a mechanical failure in the high-pressure pump or a fuel volume control valve (VCV/IMV) malfunction. This fault can cause the vehicle to enter a reduced power mode (Limp Mode).
Possible Causes
Faulty fuel pressure regulator (IMV/VCV/FPR)
Worn high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP)
Clogged fuel filter or restriction in fuel lines
Faulty fuel rail pressure (FRP) sensor providing incorrect readings
Internal injector leakage (high return flow)
Low-pressure fuel pump (LPFP) failure in the tank
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Check fuel filter condition and service history. Replace if clogged.
- Visually inspect fuel lines for leaks, kinks, or restrictions.
- Use a scan tool to monitor 'Desired vs. Actual' fuel pressure. At idle, it should be stable (approx. 250-400 bar for diesel depending on model).
- Measure resistance of the fuel volume control valve (typically 2-5 Ohms) and check Duty-cycle with an oscilloscope (should vary with load).
- Perform an injector leak-back test to determine if pressure drop is caused by internal injector leakage.
- If pressure remains low despite a functional regulator and clean filters, replace the high-pressure fuel pump.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
