Technical Description
P0156 is a standard OBD-II diagnostic trouble code which indicates a malfunction in the downstream oxygen (O2) sensor circuit for Bank 2, Sensor 2. Bank 2 refers to the side of the engine opposite cylinder #1, and Sensor 2 refers to the post-catalytic converter sensor. The ECU monitors the sensor voltage output to ensure the catalytic converter is functioning correctly. If the voltage signal stays too high, too low, or is unresponsive (typically biased around 0.45V if biased or staying dead) for a predetermined period, the ECU triggers the CEL and stores this code.
Possible Causes
Faulty Oxygen Sensor (internal short or open circuit)
Damaged wiring harness or corrosion in the sensor connector
Exhaust leak near or upstream of the sensor affecting readings
Faulty engine control unit (ECU) or software issue

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
