Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0157 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) voltage for Bank 2, Sensor 2 remains below a calibrated threshold (typically below 0.2V) for a predetermined period. This sensor is located downstream of the catalytic converter and monitors its efficiency. A persistent low voltage signal indicates either an excessively lean exhaust condition or an open/shorted electrical circuit within the sensor or wiring harness.

Defective oxygen sensor (internal short or sensor age/fouling)
Wiring issues (chafed insulation against exhaust or corroded connectors)
Exhaust leak upstream of or near the sensor (introducing ambient air)
Faulty Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or incorrect fuel pressure regulation

- Visual Inspection: Check the wiring harness for Bank 2 Sensor 2 for heat damage or corrosion in the connector. Inspect exhaust for leaks.
- Measurement: Use OBD-II live data. The voltage should ideally stay steady around 0.45V-0.6V during steady cruise. If stuck at 0.1V-0.2V, check sensor power supply and ground.
- Advanced Diagnosis: Induce a rich condition (e.g., using propane or brake cleaner into intake) and observe if sensor voltage rises above 0.8V. No response confirms a dead sensor.
- Replacement: Replace the oxygen sensor (Bank 2, Sensor 2). Clear codes and perform a drive cycle.
