Technical Description
P0165 occurs when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) determines that the oxygen (O2) sensor located at post-catalytic position Bank 2, Sensor 3, is responding too slowly to changes in air-fuel mixture. The ECU monitors the response time as the sensor transitions between lean (approx. 0.1V) and rich (approx. 0.9V) states. If the response frequency is lower than the calibrated threshold, the diagnostic logic fails the sensor. This sensor is primarily used for monitoring catalyst efficiency and secondary fuel trim adjustments.
Possible Causes
Faulty O2 sensor (aged or contaminated sensing element)
Damaged wiring or corrosion in the sensor connector
Exhaust leak near the sensor (introducing fresh air)
Faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU)

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
