Technical Description
P0166 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the oxygen (O2) sensor circuit for Bank 2, Sensor 3, shows no activity. This means the voltage signal from the sensor is stationary and not fluctuating as required for closed-loop fuel control. Sensor 3 is typically the downstream monitor located after the catalytic converters to verify emissions efficiency. Unlike front sensors that cycle rapidly, the rear sensor should move slowly but must still show electrical life. A 'frozen' signal usually indicates an open circuit, a failed sensor element, or a ground issue.
Possible Causes
Faulty Oxygen Sensor (contaminated or aged sensor element)
Wiring issues (open circuit or short to ground in signal wire)
Connector problems (corrosion in the plug or loose pins)
Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM) or software glitch

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
