Technical Description
OBD-II error code P0169 is defined as 'Incorrect Fuel Composition'. The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the fuel composition sensor, which typically utilizes a frequency-based signal to report ethanol percentage and a pulse width signal for fuel temperature. The ECM sets this code when the data from the sensor indicates a fuel mix that is physically impossible or inconsistent with the observed long-term fuel trims. On modern Flex-Fuel systems, the sensor operates by measuring the dielectric constant of the fuel. An incorrect reading directly impacts the stoichiometric ratio (Lambda 1.0) target, leading to potential combustion issues.
Possible Causes
Contaminated fuel (e.g., water in fuel or incorrect fuel blend)
Faulty fuel composition sensor
Wiring issues or corroded connector at the sensor
Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM)

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
