Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0170 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has reached its adaptive limit for fuel trim on Bank 1. The ECM monitors the Long Term Fuel Trim (LTFT) and Short Term Fuel Trim (STFT) via feedback from the Oxygen (O2) sensors. If the correction required to maintain the stoichiometric ratio exceeds calibrated limits (typically +/- 20-25%), P0170 is triggered. This code is a 'system' fault, meaning the ECU cannot identify the exact root cause, only that it can no longer control the mixture effectively.
Possible Causes
Vacuum leaks/unmetered air after the MAF sensor
Faulty or contaminated Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
Incorrect fuel pressure (regulator or pump failure)
Leaking fuel injectors or biased Oxygen (O2) sensor

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
