Technical Description
P0174 indicates that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has reached its maximum enrichment limit for fuel trims on Bank 2. This signifies a 'lean condition', meaning there is either too much unmetered air entering the system or not enough fuel being delivered to maintain the stoichiometric ratio (Lambda 1.0). The code is triggered when the ECU's corrective action (LTFT) exceeds a calibrated threshold, typically around +25%. This imbalance disrupts the combustion process and increases NOx emissions due to high combustion temperatures.
Possible Causes
Intake vacuum leaks (intake manifold gaskets, vacuum hoses)
Dirty or faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
Clogged fuel filter or failing fuel pump (low fuel pressure)
Faulty Oxygen (O2) sensor on Bank 2 providing false readings
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check all vacuum hoses and intake boots for cracks or leaks. Inspect the PCV system for integrity.
- Sensor Diagnosis: Use a scan tool to monitor MAF sensor readings in Live Data. Typical idle values are 2-5 g/s. Clean the sensor using specialized MAF cleaner if readings are erratic.
- Fuel Pressure Test: Measure fuel pressure at the rail with a mechanical gauge. Compare against OEM specs (typically 45-60 PSI). If pressure is low, inspect the pump and filter.
- Vacuum Leak Detection: Perform a smoke test on the intake tract to locate pinhole leaks.
- Replace Components: Swap out faulty gaskets, MAF sensor, or fuel delivery components based on diagnostic findings.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
