Technical Description
P0175 indicates that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has reached its adaptive limit for fuel trim on Bank 2. The ECU is attempting to lean out the mixture because the oxygen sensor reports a 'rich' condition (excess fuel or insufficient air). The code is typically set when the Long Term Fuel Trim (LTFT) exceeds approximately -25%. Bank 2 refers to the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder number one.
Possible Causes
Leaking fuel injector on bank 2
Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor (can affect both banks but trigger P0175 first)
Excessive fuel pressure (e.g., faulty fuel pressure regulator)
Clogged air filter or intake restriction
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual inspection: Check vacuum lines and intake boots for damage. Ensure the air filter is clean.
- Measurement: Use a fuel pressure gauge to check system pressure. Normal values are typically 45-65 PSI depending on the vehicle. Monitor MAF sensor readings via scan tool (typical 2-5 g/s at idle).
- Advanced diagnosis: Monitor Oxygen Sensor (Bank 2, Sensor 1) voltage oscillation (should cycle rapidly between 0.1V and 0.9V). If stuck above 0.6V, it confirms rich condition.
- Component replacement: Replace leaking injectors or a faulty fuel pressure regulator as necessary.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
