Technical Description
P0179 is set when the Engine Control Unit (ECM/PCM) detects a voltage or frequency signal from the Fuel Composition Sensor (Flex Fuel Sensor) that is above the calibrated limit. The sensor monitors the ethanol content and fuel temperature. It typically outputs a square wave signal where frequency represents ethanol percentage and pulse width represents temperature. A 'Circuit High' condition often indicates an open circuit, a short to voltage, or a failed sensor outputting an out-of-range frequency (typically above 150-160 Hz). This affects fuel trim and ignition timing mapping.

- Visual Inspection: Check wiring and connectors at the fuel composition sensor for corrosion, bent pins, or frayed wires.
- Voltage Testing: Verify the sensor has proper power (typically 12V) and ground. Check for 5V reference on the signal wire with the sensor disconnected.
- Oscilloscope/Frequency Test: Use an oscilloscope or frequency-capable DMM to back-probe the signal wire. A normal signal is typically a 50-150 Hz square wave.
- Fuel Quality Check: Ensure the fuel is not contaminated with water, which can skew the sensor readings.
- Replacement: If wiring and fuel are okay but the signal remains fixed at high voltage or out-of-range frequency, replace the fuel composition sensor.
