Technical Description
P0194 is stored when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects an intermittent or erratic signal from the Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) sensor. The sensor monitors the fuel pressure within the rail to allow the ECU to manage fuel delivery and timing. When the signal voltage jumps or drops unexpectedly outside of the calibrated range (often related to 'rationality' checks), the ECU marks the data as unreliable. This is typically an electrical circuit or sensor issue rather than a physical fuel pressure loss.
Possible Causes
High resistance or loose pins in the sensor connector
Faulty Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) sensor (internal intermittent failure)
Wiring harness damage (chafing or heat damage)
Issues with the fuel pump driver module or ECU
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual inspection: Check the sensor connector for corrosion or pushed-out pins. Clean with contact cleaner.
- Measurement: Verify a stable 5.0V reference voltage and ground with ignition ON. Measure signal voltage (typically 0.5V at KOEO, 1.0-4.5V during operation).
- Advanced diagnosis: Use an oscilloscope to monitor the signal for dropouts while performing a 'wiggle test' on the wiring harness.
- Action: Replace the FRP sensor if signal remains erratic despite proper power/ground supply. Clear codes and perform a road test.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
