Technical Description
The P0217 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicates that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an engine over-temperature condition. This occurs when the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor reports values exceeding a manufacturer-defined safety limit (typically above 240°F/115°C). The system triggers this code to protect mechanical engine components from catastrophic failure. The ECU may implement a derate strategy (reduced engine power) and disable the A/C compressor to mitigate heat soak.
Possible Causes
Low coolant level due to leaks (radiator, hoses, water pump).
Faulty thermostat stuck in the closed position.
Inoperative cooling fan or fan relay/control module failure.
Clogged or restricted radiator (internal scale or external debris).
Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor providing false high readings.

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
