P0218 - Transmission Over Temperature Condition

Technical Description
P0218 is set when the Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) sensor has reported a temperature exceeding a calibrated limit, typically above 265-300°F (130-150°C), for a specific duration. This code is a logic-based fault indicating a thermal overload rather than a direct electrical circuit failure. Upon activation, the vehicle may enter 'Limp Mode' or adjust shift patterns (e.g., aggressive torque converter lock-up) to minimize heat generation from fluid shear.
Possible Causes
Severe operating conditions (e.g., heavy towing or steep grade driving)
Clogged or restricted transmission oil cooler
Faulty Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) sensor reporting incorrect data
Internal mechanical transmission failure (slipping clutches) or critically low fluid level

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
