Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0220 is set when the powertrain control module (PCM) detects a signal voltage from the throttle position sensor 'B' (TPS) or accelerator pedal position sensor 'B' (APP) that is outside of the specified operating range. Modern drive-by-wire systems use multiple sensors for redundancy. If the PCM detects a correlation error or a voltage deviation in circuit 'B', it will trigger this code and typically enter 'Limp Home Mode' to ensure safety. This involves restricting throttle plate opening and limiting engine RPM through high-priority CAN bus messaging.
Possible Causes
Faulty accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor or throttle position sensor (TPS)
Corrosion or poor connection in the connector at the throttle body or pedal
Wiring damage (short to ground or open circuit in the signal wire)
Faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU) or software glitch

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
