Technical Description
P023D is set when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects an implausible deviation between the Turbocharger Boost Pressure Sensor 'A' signal and the Intake Manifold Pressure (MAP) or Barometric Pressure sensor during specific operating conditions (typically ignition on/engine off or at idle). The ECU cross-references these sensors to ensure calibration. If the delta exceeds a calibrated threshold (usually >5-10 kPa), a correlation error is triggered. This fault impacts air mass calculation and torque management logic.
Possible Causes
Clogged or faulty Boost Pressure Sensor (MAP sensor)
Leakage in intercooler or boost hoses (intake system leak)
High resistance or damaged wiring harness to the sensor
Faulty EGR valve leaking exhaust gases into the intake at inappropriate times
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual inspection: Check boost hoses and intercooler for cracks or oil contamination. Clean the boost sensor of soot or oil deposits.
- Measurement: Verify 5.0V reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector. Measure signal voltage with Ignition On, Engine Off (KOEO); it should correspond to barometric pressure (approx. 1.0V at sea level).
- Advanced diagnosis: Use a scan tool to monitor MAP, Boost, and Baro pressures simultaneously. All three should be nearly identical with the engine off.
- Component replacement: If the sensor provides incorrect signals despite proper power/ground, replace the boost sensor. In case of software calibration issues, an ECU update may be required (common on certain Ford/Land Rover models).
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
