Technical Description
P0252 is a generic diagnostic trouble code indicating that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a range or performance issue within the fuel metering control 'A' circuit of the injection pump. The ECU monitors the feedback from the metering solenoid (spill valve) to ensure the commanded fuel delivery matches the actual performance. If the signal remains outside of the calibrated parameters for a set period, the ECU triggers the code. This is often related to either mechanical binding within the pump assembly or electrical interference/resistance issues in the control circuit.
Possible Causes
Mechanical binding of the fuel metering valve or internal injection pump wear
Air in the fuel system or a clogged fuel filter causing flow fluctuations
Faulty wiring or poor ground connection to the injection pump solenoid
Internal ECU fault misinterpreting the PWM feedback signal
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- STEP 1: Inspect the fuel filter for clogs and check for air bubbles in the fuel lines. Ensure the connector at the pump is free from corrosion.
- STEP 2: Measure the resistance of the fuel metering solenoid. Typical values are 0.5–2.0 Ohms (refer to OEM service manual for exact specs).
- STEP 3: Use an oscilloscope to monitor the Duty Cycle signal from the ECU to the pump. The signal should be a clean PWM waveform without interference.
- STEP 4: If filters are fresh and wiring is verified, the internal injection pump mechanism is likely faulty and requires replacement or rebuild.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
