Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0257 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects a range or performance issue within the fuel metering control circuit 'B' of the injection pump. This specifically relates to the pump's ability to regulate fuel volume/pressure via the metering valve (often an IMV or VCV). The ECM monitors the relationship between the commanded duty cycle and the actual fuel rail pressure/pump feedback. If the response is inconsistent with the programmed mapping, or if the sensor feedback indicates an implausible position of the metering internal components (Cam/Rotor/Injector), P0257 is triggered. This can trigger Limp Mode to protect the high-pressure system.
Possible Causes
Faulty or sticking fuel metering control valve (IMV/VCV) on the high-pressure pump.
Corrosion or poor connection in the wiring harness or connectors leading to the pump.
Clogged fuel filter causing restricted flow or cavitation.
Internal mechanical failure of the high-pressure pump (cam/rotor wear) or a malfunctioning ECM driver circuit.
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connector to the fuel metering valve for corrosion, backing out pins, or chafing.
- Fuel Filter: Verify the service history of the fuel filter; restricted flow can trigger range/performance codes.
- Electrical Testing: Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the solenoid (typically 2-5 Ohms). Use an oscilloscope to verify the PWM signal from the ECM.
- Software Diagnosis: Perform an output/actuator test using a professional scan tool to command the valve and monitor fuel rail pressure response.
- Component Replacement: Replace the fuel metering valve if it is sticking or electrically out of spec. If metal shavings are found in the valve, the entire high-pressure pump and system must be replaced.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
