Technical Description
P0260 is set when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects an intermittent or erratic signal from the fuel metering control circuit 'B' associated with the injection pump. This typically refers to high-pressure diesel injection pumps (like VP44 or similar rotor/cam systems). The ECU monitors the voltage and duty cycle of the metering solenoid. If the signal is lost or fluctuates outside of predefined thresholds for short durations, P0260 is triggered. This fault often causes the vehicle to enter 'Limp Mode' to prevent mechanical damage from fuel delivery imbalances.
Possible Causes
Loose connection or corrosion in the wiring harness to the injection pump module
Failing fuel metering solenoid within the high-pressure pump
Worn internal mechanical components (cam/rotor) causing timing deviations
Faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU) or software glitch
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the wiring harness leading to the injection pump. Look for frayed wires or corrosion/oxidation in the connector pins.
- Resistance Measurement: Measure the resistance (Ohm) of the metering solenoid. Typical values are 0.5 - 2.5 Ohms depending on OEM specs. Check for consistent reference voltage (5V or 12V) with ignition on.
- Oscilloscope Testing: Monitor the duty cycle signal while the engine is running. The waveform should be consistent without dropouts.
- Component Replacement: Clean connectors with contact cleaner. If the intermittent signal persists, the metering solenoid or the entire high-pressure pump may require replacement. Requires professional scan tool for adaptation/coding.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
