Technical Description
P0274 is stored when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an abnormally high voltage within the fuel injector control circuit for cylinder number 5. This typically indicates that the ECM sees a voltage close to battery potential when it attempts to ground the circuit to fire the injector. The ECM monitors the flyback voltage and the current draw; if the resistance is too high or if the circuit is shorted to voltage, the ECM will flag this code and potentially disable the injector to prevent engine or catalytic converter damage.
Possible Causes
Faulty fuel injector (internal short or open coil)
Wiring harness damage (short to voltage in the injector loom)
Corrosion or poor connection in the injector connector
Internal Engine Control Module (ECM) failure
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the connector at injector 5 for corrosion, bent pins, or signs of heat damage.
- Resistance Test: Measure the resistance across the injector pins using a multimeter (typically 12-16 Ohms for high-impedance injectors; check manufacturer specs).
- Wiring Diagnosis: Test for continuity and check for a short to 12V on the control wire back to the ECM.
- Advanced Testing: Use an oscilloscope to verify the injector pulse width and peak hold current.
- Repair: Replace the injector if it fails resistance tests or repair the damaged wiring harness.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
