Technical Description
P0275 indicates that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that cylinder 5 is underperforming or not contributing its expected share of power to the crankshaft's rotation. The ECU monitors crankshaft acceleration using the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. If the acceleration following cylinder 5's power stroke is significantly lower than a calibrated threshold compared to the other cylinders, this code is triggered. This typically relates to fuel delivery, cylinder compression, or injector electrical characteristics.
Possible Causes
Clogged or faulty fuel injector for cylinder 5
Electrical fault in the injector circuit (loose connection or corrosion)
Mechanical engine issue (low compression on cylinder 5, e.g., leaking valves or piston rings)
Faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU) or software glitch
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Perform a visual inspection of the wiring and connector for injector 5. Look for damage or oxidation.
- Measure the internal resistance of the injector with a multimeter. Normal values are often 12-16 Ohms for high-impedance injectors (check vehicle specs). If resistance is infinite, replace the injector.
- Perform an injector balance test using a scan tool to monitor fuel flow per cylinder.
- Conduct a compression test on cylinder 5 and compare it with other cylinders (maximum 10-15% deviation allowed).
- If necessary, swap injectors between cylinder 5 and another cylinder. If the fault code follows the injector, the component is faulty. Note: swapping may require reprogramming of injector classification (IMA/ISA codes) in the ECU.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
