Technical Description
P0281 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that cylinder number 7 is contributing less power than the other cylinders. The ECM monitors the crankshaft position sensor to measure the acceleration of the crankshaft during each cylinder's power stroke. If cylinder 7 fails to accelerate the crankshaft at the expected rate compared to the others, the P0281 code is stored. This diagnostic is part of the cylinder balance test and can indicate issues with fuel delivery, cylinder compression, or internal mechanical components.
Possible Causes
Defective or clogged fuel injector (Cylinder 7)
Electrical issue in the wiring harness or connector for the injector (high resistance)
Internal engine mechanical problem (e.g., low compression, worn piston rings, or valve issues)
Faulty crankshaft position sensor or internal ECU failure

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
