Technical Description
P0284 indicates that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that cylinder number 8 is not contributing the expected amount of power compared to the other cylinders. The ECU monitors the crankshaft acceleration rate after each firing stroke using the crankshaft position sensor. If the acceleration for cylinder 8 falls outside the programmed tolerances (often measured in microseconds per segment), the code is stored. This is typically indicative of fuel delivery issues or mechanical inefficiency within that specific cylinder.
Possible Causes
Defective or clogged fuel injector (injector 8)
Poor electrical connection or wiring harness issue at injector 8
Internal engine mechanical problem (low compression, valve issues)
Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM) or incorrect software calibration

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
