Technical Description
P0285 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a low voltage condition in the fuel injector control circuit for cylinder number 9. The injector is a solenoid-operated device, and the ECM monitors the feedback voltage on the control wire. A 'Circuit Low' condition typically signifies that the voltage is being pulled down, often due to a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness or a low internal resistance within the injector solenoid itself. The ECM uses this data to adjust pulse width; if the circuit is compromised, it may disable the injector for cylinder protection, leading to a misfire.
Possible Causes
Faulty fuel injector for cylinder 9 (internal short)
Wiring harness damaged or shorted to ground
Corroded or loose connector pins at the injector
Failed injector driver circuit within the PCM/ECU
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- VISUAL INSPECTION: Inspect wiring harness for cylinder 9 injector for chafing, burns, or broken wires. Ensure the connector is securely seated and clean.
- RESISTANCE TEST: Disconnect the injector connector. Measure the resistance across the injector terminals using a multimeter. Expect 11–18 Ohms (refer to OEM specs). A reading near 0 Ohms indicates an internal short.
- SIGNAL TEST: Verify 12V delivery to the injector connector. Use a Noid light to check if the ECM is pulsing the ground circuit during cranking.
- CIRCUIT TESTING: Check for continuity and short-to-ground on the control wire back to the PCM connector.
- COMPONENT REPLACEMENT: Replace the injector if it fails resistance tests or repair the wiring if a short is found. Clear codes and perform a drive cycle.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
