Technical Description
P0287 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that cylinder 9 is not contributing a sufficient amount of power relative to the other cylinders. The ECM monitors crankshaft acceleration using the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor for each firing event. If the acceleration rate for cylinder 9 is below a pre-programmed threshold, the code is stored. This code is specific to engines with 10 or more cylinders. The fault typically stems from issues with fuel delivery, ignition performance, or mechanical engine compression.
Possible Causes
Defective or clogged fuel injector for cylinder 9
Ignition system fault (spark plug or ignition coil failure)
Electrical wiring or connector issues in the injector circuit
Mechanical engine failure (e.g., low compression, valve issues, or worn camshaft lobe)

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
