Technical Description
OBD-II fault code P028B is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects a voltage within the fuel injector control circuit for cylinder 9 that is higher than the calibrated limit. This typically signifies a short to voltage (B+) in the wiring harness or a failed injector solenoid. The ECM monitors the 'high side' and 'low side' of the injector driver circuit; if the voltage remains high when the driver is commanded 'OFF' or fails to drop when 'ON', the DTC is stored. This code is specific to multi-cylinder engines (V10/V12) and will trigger a reduced power mode to prevent catalytic converter damage.
Possible Causes
Short to voltage in the wiring harness for injector 9
Faulty fuel injector (internal solenoid short)
Corroded or damaged connector pins at the injector
Internal Engine Control Module (ECM) driver fault
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check wiring harness and connector for cylinder 9 injector for chafing, heat damage, or corrosion.
- Resistance Test: Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the injector solenoid. Standard range is usually 10-15 Ohms. If reading is 0 Ohms, the injector is internally shorted.
- Voltage Check: With ignition ON, check for short to voltage on the control wire. If 12V+ is present where it shouldn't be, trace the wire back to the ECM.
- Advanced Diagnosis: Use an oscilloscope to view the injector waveform to ensure the ECM driver is pulsing the ground correctly.
- Replacement: If wiring is verified and injector resistance is out of spec, replace the fuel injector. Clear DTCs and perform a test drive.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
