Technical Description
P0293 is triggered when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that cylinder number 11 is contributing less power than the other cylinders. The ECU monitors the crankshaft speed fluctuations (angular acceleration) following each firing stroke using the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. If the acceleration produced by cylinder 11 falls below a calibrated threshold relative to the average of the other cylinders, a contribution/balance fault is logged. This issue typically relates to fuel delivery (injector), mechanical compression, or ignition timing. The ECU may attempt to compensate by adjusting the fuel delivery (cylinder balancing), but once the limits of adjustment are exceeded, the code is stored.
Possible Causes
Faulty or clogged fuel injector on cylinder 11 (internal mechanical blockage or electrical fault).
High resistance or damaged wiring harness/connector for injector 11.
Internal engine mechanical issue (carbon buildup on valves, worn piston rings, or camshaft wear on cylinder 11).
Faulty crankshaft position sensor or damaged tone ring on the flywheel.
Internal Engine Control Unit (ECU) failure.

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
