Technical Description
The P0297 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the vehicle speed has exceeded a maximum calibrated limit. This code is often classified as an 'informational' code rather than a hard circuit failure. The ECM monitors vehicle speed using the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor or wheel speed data transmitted over the CAN bus from the ABS module. When the threshold is surpassed, the ECM may trigger a speed limiter function, such as fuel injector cutout, to reduce vehicle speed and protect the drivetrain and tires.
Possible Causes
Vehicle operated above the pre-programmed speed limit (driver induced)
Incorrect tire size (larger rolling circumference than calibrated)
Faulty Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) or Output Shaft Speed sensor providing erratic data
Corrupt ECU software or incorrect parameters set during aftermarket tuning

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
