Technical Description
P029D is triggered when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the fuel injector for cylinder 1 is restricted or under-performing. The ECU monitors fuel trim adaptations and crankshaft speed fluctuations (misfire detection logic). If the pulse width required to maintain the target air-fuel ratio exceeds a calibrated threshold, or if the contribution from cylinder 1 is significantly lower than the other cylinders despite maximum enrichment, this code is stored. This typically indicates a mechanical restriction or a partially clogged injector nozzle rather than a purely electrical circuit fault.
Possible Causes
Clogged or dirty fuel injector (Cylinder 1)
Low fuel pressure or air in the fuel system
Faulty fuel pressure regulator or clogged fuel filter
Engine mechanical wear (low compression on cylinder 1) or corrosion in the electrical connector
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check injector connector for corrosion or loose pins. Inspect fuel lines for kinks/leaks.
- Cleaning: Attempt a professional-grade fuel system cleaner through the fuel rail or tank.
- Measurements: Test fuel pressure using a gauge (verify against OEM specs). Measure injector resistance (typical range 12-16 Ohms for high-impedance injectors).
- Advanced Diagnosis: Perform an injector balance test using a scan tool. Monitor cylinder contribution and fuel trim data.
- Repair: Replace fuel injector for cylinder 1 and reset learned fuel adaptations in the ECU.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
