P02A2 - Cylinder 3 Fuel Trim at Max Limit

Technical Description
The P02A2 code is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM) has reached its adaptive limit for fuel compensation on cylinder number 3. Specifically, it means the ECM is detecting a lean condition and is attempting to enrich the mixture for that specific cylinder. When the 'Long Term Fuel Trim' compensation exceeds a calibrated threshold (typically above +25% depending on OEM), the diagnostic logic assumes a hardware failure. This is often monitored via the crankshaft position sensor (RPM fluctuations per firing event) and oxygen sensor feedback to determine cylinder-specific contribution.
Possible Causes
Clogged or faulty fuel injector on cylinder 3 (mechanical restriction)
Intake manifold leak or vacuum leak specific to cylinder 3
High resistance in the injector wiring harness or connector oxidation
Low engine compression in cylinder 3 or faulty valve sealing

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
