Technical Description
P02A3 is a generic OBD-II code indicating that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has exceeded its maximum compensation limit while attempting to lean out the fuel mixture in cylinder 3. The ECU monitors air-to-fuel ratios via oxygen sensors and detects that cylinder 3 is running rich. The ECU attempts to reduce injector pulse width for that specific cylinder, but once it reaches the hard software limit without achieving stoichiometric balance, P02A3 is triggered. This typically points to an injector mechanical failure, pressure issues, or ignition misfires causing unburned fuel to exit the cylinder.
Possible Causes
Leaking or stuck open fuel injector (Cylinder 3)
Faulty spark plug or ignition coil (causing incomplete combustion/misfire)
Wiring harness damage or connector corrosion at the injector
Low compression in cylinder 3 or internal ECU driver failure
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- STEP 1: Inspect the fuel injector connector for cylinder 3 for corrosion. Check the spark plug for fuel fouling or carbon buildup.
- STEP 2: Measure injector resistance using a Multimeter. Standard range is typically 11-16 Ohms. Use an oscilloscope to check the injector signal (pulse) to ensure the ECU driver is operating correctly.
- STEP 3: Perform a fuel pressure leak-down test. If pressure drops rapidly, an injector may be stuck open. Swap the injector with cylinder 1 to see if the code follows (P029D).
- STEP 4: Replace the faulty fuel injector on cylinder 3. Clear codes and monitor LTFT (Long Term Fuel Trim) during a test drive.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
