Technical Description
P02AD is an OBD-II diagnostic trouble code indicating that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has reached its maximum adjustment limit for the fuel injector on cylinder 2. The ECU employs 'Injector Quantity Adjustment' (IQA) or 'Fuel Trim' logic to balance the power output of each cylinder. By monitoring crankshaft speed fluctuations via the CKP sensor, the ECU detects if cylinder 2 is under-performing. If it increases the injection duration to its maximum calibrated ceiling without achieving the target torque, P02AD is triggered. This typically points to a lean condition specifically affecting cylinder 2.
Possible Causes
Clogged or restricted fuel injector (Cylinder 2)
Worn injector with internal leakage or poor spray pattern
High resistance in the wiring harness or connector for injector 2
Low engine compression in cylinder 2
Faulty fuel pressure sensor or restricted fuel filter (usually affects multiple cylinders)
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the injector connector for cylinder 2 for corrosion or bent pins.
- Measurements: Measure the resistance (Ohm) of the injector coil (typical values: 12-16 Ohms for high-impedance or 0.5-2 Ohms for piezo/low-impedance diesel injectors). Check wiring for voltage drops.
- Advanced Diagnosis: Perform a Cylinder Contribution Test using a scan tool. Swap the injector from cylinder 2 to cylinder 1 to see if the code follows (changes to P02A9).
- Component Replacement: If the fault follows the injector, clean or replace the fuel injector. Note: New injectors often require IMA/IQA coding into the ECU.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
