Technical Description
P02BC is a generic powertrain code indicating that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a leaking fuel injector on cylinder 4. The ECU monitors fuel rail pressure drop-off during fuel-cut conditions and analyzes Short Term Fuel Trim (STFT) data. If a significant rich condition is detected specifically on cylinder 4, or if the fuel rail pressure drops faster than calibrated limits when the injectors are commanded shut, this code is triggered. Excessive fuel delivery can lead to catalyst overheating and engine oil dilution.
Possible Causes
Faulty or dirty fuel injector on cylinder 4 (mechanical leak)
Electrical fault in the injector circuit (short to ground keeping the injector open longer)
Faulty fuel pressure regulator or fuel pressure sensor providing incorrect data
Internal Engine Control Unit (ECU) software or hardware fault
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- STEP 1: Inspect the connector for injector 4 for corrosion or damage. Perform a fuel pressure leak-down test to confirm if the rail loses pressure when the engine is off.
- STEP 2: Measure the injector resistance (Ohms). Compare the value to manufacturer specs (typically 12-16 Ohms for high impedance). Check the harness for a short to ground.
- STEP 3: Use a scan tool to perform a cylinder contribution test. If a mechanical leak is suspected, swap the injector to another cylinder to see if the fault code follows (e.g., changes to P02BD for cylinder 5).
- STEP 4: Replace the fuel injector on cylinder 4. For GDI or common rail diesel, ensure the new injector's calibration code (IMA/QR code) is programmed into the ECU.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
