Technical Description
P02C3 indicates that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has reached its maximum enrichment limit for the fuel trim on cylinder 11. This means the system is attempting to compensate for an excessively lean condition by increasing injector pulse width but has hit the calibrated software ceiling. The ECU monitors individual cylinder contribution via oxygen sensors, crankshaft position sensor speed fluctuations, and fuel trim logic. This condition triggers a MIL and may result in reduced engine power to prevent catalyst damage.
Possible Causes
Clogged or faulty fuel injector for cylinder 11
Intake vacuum leak specifically near the cylinder 11 intake runner
Faulty spark plug or ignition coil causing incomplete combustion
Mechanical engine problem (low compression) on cylinder 11 or wiring harness issue
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check for vacuum leaks near the cylinder 11 intake area and inspect the injector electrical connector for corrosion.
- Measurement: Measure injector resistance (typically 11-14 Ohms). Verify fuel rail pressure is within OEM specifications.
- Advanced Diagnosis: Perform an injector balance test or use an oscilloscope to monitor injector pulse width and signal integrity. Conduct a compression or leak-down test on cylinder 11.
- Repair: Clean or replace the fuel injector for cylinder 11. Reset fuel trim adaptations using a diagnostic tool.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
