Technical Description
P02C8 is stored when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) can no longer compensate for an extremely rich fuel condition in cylinder 10. The ECU has attempted to decrease the fuel delivery (Negative Fuel Trim) by reducing the injector pulse width, but has reached the minimum calibrated limit. This indicates that the specific cylinder is receiving too much fuel or insufficient air. Since this code is cylinder-specific, it typically points toward a localized mechanical or electrical issue rather than a global sensor failure like a MAF sensor.
Possible Causes
Leaking or 'dripping' fuel injector (Cylinder 10)
Faulty ignition coil or spark plug causing incomplete combustion
Defective fuel pressure regulator or excessive fuel pressure
Short to ground/voltage in the injector wiring harness
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- 2. Scan tool diagnosis: Monitor 'Short Term Fuel Trim' for Cylinder 10. 3. Injector testing: Perform a fuel pressure drop test using a scan tool to see if injector 10 leaks when closed. 4. 5. Component swap: Swap injector 10 with injector 9. If the code moves to cylinder 9 (P02C6), the injector is faulty and requires replacement.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
