Technical Description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) monitors the fuel injector trim values to maintain a smooth idle and optimal combustion. P02D4 is triggered when the system has attempted to compensate for a fuel delivery deviation on cylinder 5 but has reached the maximum allowable adaptive learning limit. This typically indicates a clogged injector, wear, or a mechanical issue affecting combustion in that specific cylinder. The system may enter Limp Home Mode to protect the catalytic converter and DPF.
Possible Causes
Clogged or faulty fuel injector (injector 5)
Fuel system cleaning or service required
Dirty fuel filter or low fuel rail pressure
Mechanical fault in cylinder 5 (e.g., low compression)
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- STEP 1: Perform a visual inspection of the wiring to injector 5. Check for leaks around the injector seat.
- STEP 2: Use a diagnostic tool to check live data (Fuel Trim/Balance Rates) for cylinder 5. Verify fuel rail pressure (Target vs. Actual).
- STEP 3: Attempt cleaning the injectors using fuel additives or professional cleaning equipment. Perform a reset of the adaptive values in the ECU.
- STEP 4: If the fault persists, carry out a leak-back test on the injectors. Replace fuel injector 5 if necessary and program the new injector's IMA/IMA code into the ECU.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
