Technical Description
P02E3 is set when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects a voltage signal higher than the expected threshold in the Diesel Intake Air Flow Control circuit. This valve regulates the volume of air entering the manifold to optimize EGR flow rates and ensure smooth engine shutdown. A 'Circuit High' condition typically signifies a short circuit to voltage or a faulty actuator motor drawing excessive current. The system monitors the duty cycle (PWM signal) and feedback voltage to ensure the throttle plate position matches the target value.
Possible Causes
Short circuit to voltage (+) in the intake throttle valve wiring harness
Faulty intake air flow control actuator (internal short)
Corroded or damaged connectors causing high resistance/faulty signals
Internal ECM/ECU failure providing incorrect voltage supply
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check wiring harness and the connector at the intake throttle body for chafing, heat damage, or oxidation.
- Measurements: Disconnect the actuator and measure voltage on the control line with ignition ON. It should not show constant battery voltage unless commanded. Check actuator internal resistance (typically 5-50 Ohms depending on OEM specs).
- Advanced Diagnosis: Perform a bi-directional actuator test using a scan tool. Monitor PWM duty cycle and throttle position sensor (TPS) feedback. A mechanically stuck valve can cause electrical overcurrent.
- Action: Clean carbon buildup from the throttle plate. If electrical faults persist, replace the intake air flow control valve and perform adaptation reset using a diagnostic tool.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
