Technical Description
P02E7 is set when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects a performance Rationality fault with the Diesel Intake Air Flow (DIAF) control valve position sensor. The ECU compares the commanded throttle position with the actual feedback signal from the sensor. If the deviation exceeds a calibrated threshold for a specific duration, the code is stored. This component is critical for EGR management, DPF regeneration, and smooth engine shutdown. Common failure modes include mechanical binding due to carbon buildup, stripped internal gears, or electrical signal noise on the 5V reference or signal return circuits.
Possible Causes
Mechanical binding or carbon buildup (soot) in the throttle body
Stripped or damaged internal actuator gears
Faulty position sensor (internal to the throttle assembly)
Wiring harness issues (chafing) or terminal tension in the connector
ECU software calibration error
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the connector for corrosion and the wiring harness for chafing. Inspect intake hoses for oil/soot leaks.
- Mechanical Check: Remove the intake hose and check the throttle plate for free movement. Clean heavy carbon deposits using a dedicated cleaner.
- Electrical Testing: Verify 5V reference voltage and ground at the actuator connector. Use an oscilloscope to monitor the feedback signal while commanding the valve via a scan tool.
- Scan Tool Analysis: Perform a bidirectional test to compare 'Commanded Throttle Position' vs 'Actual Throttle Position'.
- Replacement: If gears are stripped or the sensor is internally shorted, replace the throttle body assembly. Perform the required 'relearn' or adaptation procedure with a diagnostic tool.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
