Technical Description
P02ED is set when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the actual intake air flow at idle exceeds the desired programmed value. In modern diesel engines, the intake throttle valve (Intake Air Flow Actuator) is used to restrict fresh air flow at idle to facilitate EGR flow and improve thermal management. If the air flow is too high, it suggests the throttle plate is stuck open, the EGR valve is failing to open (not displacing fresh air with inert exhaust gas), or there is a calibration/sensor error. The ECU monitors this via the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor. This fault can prevent DPF regeneration and lead to increased NOx emissions.

Carbon buildup causing the intake throttle valve to stick in the open position
Faulty intake air flow actuator (Throttle body servo)
Faulty EGR valve not opening at idle (clogged or electrical fault)
Intake system leaks after the MAF sensor or faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor calibration
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check intake hoses for leaks and inspect the throttle body connector for corrosion or loose pins.
- Testing: Check power supply to the intake actuator (usually 12V) and the control signal (PWM). Monitor the throttle position sensor (TPS) voltage (range approx. 0.5V to 4.5V).
- Cleaning: Remove the intake throttle body and clean out carbon deposits. Ensure the butterfly valve moves freely.
- Scan Tool: Perform a throttle body alignment/adaptation and test the EGR valve function via bi-directional controls.
- Replacement: If the internal gears of the actuator are stripped or the unit fails adaptation after cleaning, replace the intake air flow actuator.
Mechanic's Tip
