P02EF - Cylinder 2 Fuel Injector Offset Learning At Max Limit

Technical Description
P02EF is triggered when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) reaches its maximum adaptive learning limit for fuel injector cylinder 2. The ECU continuously monitors the rotational speed of the crankshaft to determine individual cylinder contribution. If cylinder 2 is underperforming (lean condition or slow solenoid response), the ECU increases the injector pulse width (offset). When this compensation exceeds its calibrated maximum threshold, P02EF is stored. This indicates that the injector can no longer be controlled within the required emission and performance parameters.
Possible Causes
Worn or clogged fuel injector (Cylinder 2)
Incorrect injector coding in the ECU (IQA/IMA classification codes)
Low fuel rail pressure or air in the fuel lines
Compression loss in cylinder 2 or wiring harness resistance (oxidation)
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual inspection: Check the injector connector for cylinder 2 for diesel leaks or terminal corrosion.
- Measurement: Verify injector resistance (typically 150-200 kOhm for Piezo or 0.2-1.0 Ohm for Solenoid). Perform an injector leak-back test – high return flow indicates internal wear.
- Diagnosis: Use a scan tool to verify that the correct IQA/IMA calibration code is stored in the ECU for injector 2.
- Action: Perform a 'Fuel Injector Learning' reset. If the fault persists, replace the fuel injector for cylinder 2 and program the new classification code.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
