Technical Description
P0309 is an OBD-II diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicating that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a misfire on cylinder number 9. This is typically monitored via the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor measuring subtle fluctuations in rotational velocity. If cylinder 9 fails to fire properly, the crankshaft speed drops during its power stroke. A flashing MIL (Check Engine Light) indicates a severe misfire that could lead to catalytic converter damage due to unburned fuel entering the exhaust stream.
Possible Causes
Defective ignition coil (COP) or spark plug on cylinder 9
Fuel injector circuit fault or clogged injector
Intake manifold vacuum leak near cylinder 9 runner
Mechanical engine problem (low compression, valve train issue) or wiring harness damage

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
