Technical Description
OBD-II fault code P0310 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected multiple misfires in cylinder number 10. The ECM monitors misfires using the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor by measuring the rotational speed of the crankshaft. If a cylinder fails to contribute to the engine's rotation speed during its power stroke, a misfire is recorded. Severe misfiring can cause the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) to flash, indicating potential damage to the three-way catalytic converter (TWC) due to unburned fuel entering the exhaust stream.
Possible Causes
Faulty ignition coil (Coil-on-plug failure)
Worn or fouled spark plugs
Defective fuel injector (clogged or electrical fault)
Engine mechanical issues (low compression, leaking valves)
Wiring harness issues (short or open circuit in ignition/injection looms)
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check ignition coil for cylinder 10 and its connector for signs of moisture, oil contamination, or arcing.
- Component Swap: Swap the ignition coil with a known good cylinder. If the code moves (e.g., to P0309), replace the coil. Inspect spark plug condition and gap.
- Fuel System Check: Measure injector resistance (standard values usually 12-16 Ohms) and perform an injector pulse test via scan tool.
- Mechanical Check: Perform a compression or leak-down test on cylinder 10 if ignition and fuel systems are verified functional.
- Advanced Diagnostics: Use an oscilloscope to verify the ignition trigger signal from the ECM and the actual spark duration.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
