Technical Description
P0313 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that indicates the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected engine misfires occurring specifically when the fuel level in the tank is very low. The logic assumes that low fuel levels can cause the fuel pump to momentarily ingest air during vehicle maneuvers, leading to a drop in fuel pressure and a lean misfire condition. The ECM correlates signal data from the fuel level sender with crankshaft speed fluctuations. This code is often used to prevent unnecessary engine diagnostics when the root cause is simply a lack of fuel, which could otherwise damage the catalytic converter due to lean-burn conditions.
Possible Causes
Low fuel level (Running out of gas scenario)
Faulty fuel level sensor (reporting more fuel than actually present)
Clogged fuel filter or restricted fuel flow
Failing fuel pump or damaged fuel tank baffles

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
