P0315 - Crankshaft Position System Variation Not Learned

Technical Description
P0315 is stored when the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) is unable to learn or reference the crankshaft position variation tolerances. The ECM uses the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor to monitor slight fluctuations in crankshaft speed to detect engine misfires. Due to manufacturing tolerances of the reluctor wheel, the ECM must perform a 'learn' procedure to calibrate these variations. If the profile is not stored in memory or if mechanical issues prevent a successful relearn, P0315 is triggered. This code is often related to a missing calibration rather than a failed sensor.
Possible Causes
Crankshaft Position (CASE) Variation Learn procedure not performed
Mechanical damage or debris on the crankshaft reluctor wheel
Faulty Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor or loose connector
Internal PCM/ECU fault or software corruption

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
