P0317 - Rough Road Hardware Not Present

Technical Description
P0317 is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM/ECU) detects that the 'Rough Road' hardware/sensor signal is missing or invalid. This system is crucial for misfire detection (P0300) logic. On rough terrain, driveline vibrations can cause fluctuations in crankshaft speed that the ECU might interpret as a misfire. The Rough Road sensor (often integrated into the ABS/DSC system) tells the ECU to ignore these fluctuations. If the signal is absent, the ECU cannot reliably monitor misfires under certain conditions.
Possible Causes
Open circuit or short in the wiring to the ABS sensor or ABS module (as ABS usually provides this data via CAN-bus)
Faulty ABS wheel speed sensor or debris/damage on the tone ring
ECU software glitch or incorrect configuration after a software update
Faulty standalone G-sensor/accelerometer in vehicles using dedicated hardware
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual inspection: Check ABS sensors and tone rings at the wheels. Clean if necessary. Inspect the ABS module connector for corrosion.
- Measurements: Check CAN-bus communication between ABS and ECU using a scan tool. Verify that realistic wheel speed values (km/h) are received from all four wheels.
- Advanced diagnosis: Check for related chassis codes (C-codes) in the ABS system. P0317 is often a secondary code resulting from an ABS/ESP fault.
- Action: Repair wiring or replace the faulty ABS sensor. If the vehicle recently had a software update, ensure the 'Rough Road' feature is correctly configured.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
