Technical Description
The P0351 code indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) has detected a circuit malfunction in the primary or secondary circuit of ignition coil 'A' (usually Cylinder 1). In modern COP (Coil-on-Plug) systems, the ECM monitors the ignition trigger signal. If the ECM provides a command to the coil but does not detect the appropriate feedback (the induced voltage spike) when the circuit is opened, P0351 is stored. This can be caused by an open circuit, short to voltage, short to ground, or a failed driver circuit within the PCM itself. This failure immediately impacts combustion, leading to cylinder misfire.
Possible Causes
Faulty ignition coil (internal open or short circuit)
Damaged wiring or corroded connectors leading to cylinder 1
Defective spark plugs (excessive resistance affecting primary side feed)
Internal PCM/ECU driver failure
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Inspect the connector at ignition coil 1 for oxidation or loose pins. Check wiring harness for chafing or heat damage.
- Measurement (Multimeter): Verify 12V power supply and ground at the coil connector. Measure primary winding resistance (typically 0.5 - 2.0 Ohms depending on OEM specs).
- Swap Test: Swap ignition coil A with coil B (cylinder 2). If the fault code changes to P0352, the coil is confirmed faulty.
- Advanced Diagnosis: Use an oscilloscope to probe the trigger signal from the PCM. If the signal is absent despite intact wiring, the PCM driver may be failed.
- Replacement: Replace the faulty ignition coil (and spark plugs if necessary). Clear codes and perform a test drive.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
