P0353 - Ignition Coil C Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction

Technical Description
The Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) monitors the operation of the ignition coils. For cylinder 3 (designated as Coil C), the ECM sends a trigger signal to the transistor (either internal to the ECM or integrated into the coil) to ground the primary circuit. When the ground is broken, a high-voltage induction occurs. If the ECM does not detect the signature feedback pulse from the primary circuit, it confirms a circuit fault and triggers P0353. This code specifically points to an electrical issue with the circuitry rather than a mechanical combustion fault.
Possible Causes
Faulty ignition coil (internal short or open circuit on cylinder 3)
Damaged wiring or corroded connector pins at the coil
Poor ground connection for the engine or ignition system
Internal Engine Control Module (ECM) failure in the ignition driver circuit
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check wiring and the connector at coil 3 for signs of rodent damage, melted insulation, or corrosion.
- Component Swap: Swap the ignition coil from cylinder 3 to cylinder 1. If the code moves to P0351, the coil is confirmed faulty.
- Electrical Testing: Check for 12V supply and ground at the coil connector with the key on. Verify the trigger signal from the ECM (ideally using an oscilloscope to see the pulse width and shape).
- Spark Plug Inspection: A severely worn spark plug with excessive gap can cause high secondary resistance, leading to coil failure.
- Replacement: Replace the faulty ignition coil and consider replacing the spark plugs if they are past their service interval.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
