Technical Description
P0354 is stored when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects an electrical fault in the primary or secondary circuit of ignition coil D (typically cylinder 4). The ECU monitors the driver circuit for voltage spikes and current feedback. If the inductive kickback (flyback voltage) is missing after a trigger event, it indicates a circuit failure. This state often triggers a cylinder deactivation strategy to protect the catalytic converter from unburned fuel exposure.
Possible Causes
Faulty ignition coil (internal open circuit or short in windings)
Wiring issues (chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins in the connector for cylinder 4)
Defective spark plugs with excessive resistance putting strain on the coil
Internal Engine Control Unit (ECU) failure in the ignition driver circuit
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- VISUAL INSPECTION: Check the connector for ignition coil 4 for corrosion or loose pins. Inspect the wiring harness for signs of chafing.
- COMPONENT SWAP: Swap the ignition coil from cylinder 4 to cylinder 1. Clear codes and test drive. If the code follows to P0351, the coil is faulty.
- MULTIMETER TEST: Verify 12V power supply and ground at the coil connector. Check the trigger signal from the ECU (approx. 0.5V-3.0V AC during cranking or use an oscilloscope).
- OSCILLOSCOPE DIAGNOSIS: Capture the primary waveform to analyze dwell and burn time. A missing peak in the induction curve confirms internal failure.
- ACTION: Replace the ignition coil and spark plugs if necessary. If the fault persists with known good components, investigate the ECU ignition driver.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
