Technical Description
P0356 is a standard diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicating a fault within the primary or secondary circuit of ignition coil number 6 (identified by 'F'). The PCM monitors the ignition coil's ability to charge and discharge by tracking the voltage/current behavior of the primary ignition circuit. If the PCM detects that the inductive kick (voltage spike) or the current flow is missing or fuera de limit when the driver transistor is triggered, it triggers the P0356 code. This failure results in a misfire on the cylinder, potentially leading to catalyst damage.
Possible Causes
Faulty ignition coil (internal short or open circuit)
Wiring issues (damaged insulation, short to ground, or open in the signal wire)
Poor connection or corrosion in the ignition coil connector
Failed ignition driver/transistor within the Engine Control Unit (ECU)
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check the connector for coil #6 for corrosion, loose pins, or damaged wiring. Look for signs of rodent damage.
- Measurements: Check for battery voltage (approx. 12V) at the coil power terminal with ignition on. Verify ground integrity (resistance should be <0.5 Ohms).
- Component Swap: Swap the ignition coil from cylinder 6 to a known good cylinder (e.g., #1). Clear codes and re-scan. If the code changes (e.g., to P0351), the coil is defective and needs replacement.
- Advanced Diagnosis: Use an oscilloscope to verify the trigger signal from the ECU. It should show a clean square wave signal.
- ECU Check: If the trigger signal is missing and wiring is confirmed okay, the ECU's internal driver may be faulty.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
